The Feast of St Paul in Gozo

What you need to know

What’s it about?

In 60 AD, St Paul was shipwrecked on the island. St Paul is the patron Saint of Malta, as he was the one who converted the Maltese inhabitancy to Christianity. The Feast of St Paul is to celebrate the story of how Christianity came to the island, and gives the locals an opportunity to be positive and thankful for the cultural identity this historic event left.

Cultural National Holiday

The Feast of St Paul is a national holiday, and therefore plenty of people will have a day off work. At this time of the year, people might very well go to the beach to enjoy their first summer swim. On top of that, if you want to see how the Maltese celebrate the day in Gozo, then going along will be a cultural experience. There will be lots of people, and the atmosphere is lively. The feast is in fact in February, but due to the weather the feast is celebrated on the 4rd Sunday of May in II-Munxar in Gozo.

Are you the type of person who would enjoy it?

If you are religious, and specifically Christian, then you might very well enjoy the occasion. If you are interested in the link between cultural and religious identity, regardless of your religious views, then this can also be an educational experience. If you fit into either of these two categories, you might very well find this experience most enjoyable.

What else can you do?

At this time of year, it can also be a great opportunity to visit Gozo when it is still relatively quiet. Many lovely seaside restaurants won’t be crowded, and the sea will be refreshingly beautiful and clean. The sea around Gozo is considered to be some of the cleanest sea in the Mediterranean, and therefore we suggest snorkelling. On top of that, you can try a range of excellent fresh fish.
