P1 Power boat Season Launch in Malta

Valletta’s Grand Harbour will be the impressive setting for the start of the 2009 Powerboat P1 World Championship next week (8th – 10th May) as the monohull, offshore racing series returns to Malta for the sixth consecutive year.

Powerboating has a long and prestigious history dating back over 100 years, with an established following in Malta. P1 is a relative newcomer as it enters its seventh season, but in that time it has established a reputation for delivering world class sport and entertainment in vibrant and distinctive host cities.

The Powerboat P1 event schedule will begin on Thursday evening (7th May) with the 2008 Championship Awards reception at the Corinthia Hotel St. George’s Bay, which will be home to the P1 staff and teams for the race weekend. Official testing for the Evolution and SuperSport class boats takes place the following day, with the two World Championship rounds being staged on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. “We are looking forward to delivering three days of outstanding entertainment and to big crowds turning out to cheers on their very own SuperSport world champion, Aaron Ciantar” added Asif Rangoonwala.

This year’s P1 World Championship will feature a number of new teams and venues, with the series heading east to Istanbul in June for the very first Turkish Grand Prix of the Sea and then north to Gothenburg for the inaugural Scandinavian Grand Prix of the Sea in August.

A weekend at Sea

Last weekend I decided that it was time to launch summer well and proper. Summer in Malta is not summer unless there is a boat, lots of sunshine and the beautiful blue seas around the island involved.

Friday Night I convinced a number of students to join me on a sunset cruise on a turkish gullet. The night started at around 6.30pm. We sailed into the sunset towards the blue lagoon in Comino to the sounds of a local DJ and a bongo player. Wonderful atmosphere and beutiful photo opportunities. As Eva Kraure described it:

good atmoshphere and the people were also very friendly ! I can’t find anything negative to say about this trip.

Following the boat party students went off to paceville to dance and drink the night aways. Needless to say Saturday was mostly spent nursing hangovers at the beach. Although some students also took a day trip to Sicily, Mt. Etna Taormina and Pozzallo. Others even went scuba diving !

On Sunday we wanted to relax and catch some rays, I decided that round Malta cruise on the wonderful Hera 2 was in order. We left Sliema at 9.00am and sailed towards comino from the south. The trip was relaxing and the beutiful weather made it just magical. A cold Buffet Lunch was served at 13:00 which was delicious and very healthy. A dip in the tourquise seas of the blue Lagoon and then a snooze all the way back to sliema with a gentle breeze and the sound of Hera cutting through the waves. Truly a great weekend with am Language students. Thanks to all of you who made it possible. See you next weekend!
