About Malta
|
Malta and Gozo draw over a million visitors a year. Her geographical position in heart of the Mediterranean, her beautiful clear waters, pretty rural villages, friendly inhabitants and early historical remains make Malta an ideal destination for any traveller.
Although only 25 KM long x 15 KM wide Malta has an extraordinarily rich historical and cultural heritage. Set at the crossroads of numerous Mediterranean sea routes, it has been coveted and colonized by many different maritime powers. The most glorious phase in its history was the 268 year reign of the Order of St John, whose legacy can still be seen in the fine buildings that survive.
"Mediterranean splendour and historical charm on the ancient streets of Malta." Lonely Planet.
Following the period of the Knights, Malta fell into the hands of the French for a period of two years before becoming part of the British Empire for 160 years. While retaining its Mediterranean charm, Malta truly developed into an English speaking destination.
The colonial period has left a lasting effect on the Island and its people. English is an official language, people drive on the left and daily newspapers are printed in English. Malta is a member of the European Union making it your ideal choice to learn English.
Today Malta has two official languages, ie English and Maltese. Malti is a fascinating language, reflecting a host of different influences.
